That question is puzzling school leaders throughout the U.S. U.S. schools take into account some religious holidays， like Christmas， by scheduling days off． But each religion has its own holy days， and some fall during the school week. Students who choose to observe such holidays can end up missing classes． The growing diversity among students has raised questions: Is there a fair way to honor such diversity? If schools grant holidays for one faith， how can they refuse to do the some for others? School districts cannot schedule days off for purely religious reasons． They can schedule a holiday if they think too many students or staff members will fail to attend school that day． Thus， school holidays often vary by region． Many schools are facing pressure to grant days off for different faiths．Religious groups want schools to avoid scheduling tests on holy days． A college in Albany， New York， decided to cancel classes on major Muslim holidays．But then people started asking about the rights of Hinbus，Buddhists， and jews． The school decided to return to its original schedule． In Baltimore， Maryland， the school board schebuled a day off for a jewish holiday but none off for Muslim holidays． To make matters worse， a midterm exam was scheduled on a major Muslim holy day． "Either I go against my faith，" or I miss my schoolwork and have imperfect attendance，" said Kenwal Rehman， 15 a Muslim student in the district． A Florida school board canceled all religious holidays for the sake of fairness. People protested． The district returned to its original schedule， with days off for certain Christian and Jewish holidays． A growing number of U.S. school districts now allow "floating holidays．" Students with letters from home can take excused absences for their personal faith-based holidays．
